Legendary rugby league coach Graham Lowe offered Matty the chance to switch codes, he signed for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. Mathew Ridge initially sat out the start of the 1996 ARL season, but was persuaded to play out his contract with Manly (which he was in the last season of) by coach Bob Fulton and rejoined the team in Round 9, helping to steer the Sea Eagles into their second successive Grand Final, where they defeated the St George Dragons 20–8 at the Sydney Football Stadium.
