Frank Delgrosso

A winger, standoff or halfback, Delgrosso played 11 seasons for the Ponsonby Ponies between 1919-1930, winning four Auckland Premierships in 1919, 1926, 1929 and 1930. He captained them to the victories in 1929 and 1930.

Delgrosso played during a hugely successful era for the Ponies – aside from Premiership glory they also won the Roope Rooster in 1922, 1923, 1925 and 1930, as well as the Stormont Shield in 1925 and 1926.

Played for Auckland from 1919 to 1929 and was part of the side that won the Northern Union Cup in 1919.  In 1929 he played in the Auckland team that beat Canterbury 47-18, beat south Auckland 11-8 and Northland 22-19 to hold the Northern Union Cup again.

In the late 1920’s the New Zealand Herald described Delgrosso as one of New Zealand’s most outstanding and brilliant during a Kiwis v Great Britain match.

Delgrosso went on to play nine matches for his country, scoring three tries and kicking nines goals.

In 1930 he was accused of failing to get one of his sent off team mates to leave the field, throwing mud at the referee and using foul language. He was sensationally suspended for three years, effectively ending his career.
